Building a sculpture-the process
I build unique hand-crafted animal sculptures, wall hangings and a range of vessels. All of which begin life from a single block of clay. The basic shape of the piece is first created with slabs of clay that are then wrapped in paper. With the use of clay coils, I then add the limbs, head and neck of the piece. I can spend hours perfecting the fine detail before the piece drys ready for it’s first firing in the kiln.
The sculpture is then decorated with oxides, glazes and underglazes before it is re-fired, at either earthenware or stoneware temperatures. Often, I finish the piece by introducing complimentary materials such as, wood, coconut, nylon and copper.
Sculptures are all signed by myself and sold with a certificate of authenticity. Nothing is replicated.
